01 - Overview

From Bratislava’s castle to the three-country corner: the R1 Jubilee Cycle Route crosses the whole of Burgenland north to south - from Lake Neusiedl over Eisenstadt and the Blaufränkisch wine country of central Burgenland to the Uhudler vineyards and thermal-spa region of the south.

The R1 Jubilee Cycle Route links the northernmost and southernmost points of Burgenland over some 272 kilometres - from Kittsee on the Slovak border, with Bratislava Castle in view, to Kalch near Neuhaus am Klausenbach, where Austria, Hungary and Slovenia meet. It opened in 2001 for the province’s 80th anniversary (Burgenland joined Austria in 1921), threading the region’s finest existing cycle paths into one continuous north-south spine. The north is flat: the Seewinkel plain, the reed belt and the northern shore of Lake Neusiedl, then the vineyards and orchards of the Leitha Hills around the provincial capital Eisenstadt with its Esterházy Palace. The middle turns hilly - over the Sieggraben saddle into the Blaufränkisch wine country with the potters’ town of Stoob, then the chain of castles from Lockenhaus over the peace-castle of Schlaining to the edge of the Geschriebenstein Nature Park, the highest part of the route. In the south the path rolls through the “Weinidylle” of the Pinka valley and the Uhudler wine country with its thatched cellar cottages, past Güssing Castle on its volcanic cone, through the rolling Lafnitz and Raab valleys to the three-country Raab-Örség-Goričko Nature Park. About 90 percent of the route is asphalt, the rest well-rideable field and farm tracks.
